Target Grades 7-12
Danger Dynamics 1 helps bands develop their dynamic ranges while focusing on tone, air support and balance. The exercises use long tones in a chorale-type setting. The exercises are in Bb, Eb, F and Ab Major.
Exercise 1
Exercise 1 uses fundamental dynamic changes.
Exercise 2
This exercise uses a full dynamic range. Encourage students to stagger breathe and always maintain proper air support.
Exercise 3
Exercise 3 focuses on producing a balanced crescendo and decrescendo.
Exercise 4
Exercise 4 begins in Ab, then into Bb in measure 4, and F Major in 7. No Danger Notes are marked in this exercise as it is meant to assess student’s ability to change keys quickly.
Tips
Percussion
Exercise 1 has specific measures to focus on percussion dynamics.
Danger Notes
Danger Notes are marked in all parts for exercises 1-3. You can have students refer to the Danger Chart to check their Danger Notes in each key.
Breathing
Exercises 1-3 start very quietly. Model breathing to maintain good support and tone at the quieter dynamics.
Long Tones
Danger Dynamics also works well for a quick warm-up when needed.
