Subdivisions – Levels 1-4

$10.00

Subdivisions are a method of teaching students to develop an internal sense of pulse.  The exercises are similar to what a percussionist uses when learning to play the drum set.  The exercises are meant to be played with hands in the lap however, sticks could also be used.

Level 1

This is the starting point of the method.  Only eighth notes are used to help them adjust to the reading.  They will perform half notes, quarter notes, dotted quarter notes and syncopation in the eighth note patterns.

Level 2

Level 2 is similar to Level 1, however traditional rhythmic notation is used under the subdivisions.  Remember to remind students of the tied rhythms in lines 6, 8, 9 and 11.

Level 3

Level 3 builds upon the first 2 levels adding different patterns of sixteenth notes.  The sixteenth notes require both hands however the dominant hand should still lead the sixteenth notes

Level 4

The subdivision changes to a sixteenth note pattern.  The dominant hand should play out or accent the rhythms in the lower line.

Tips

Right-Handed vs. Left-Handed Players

Students should play the eighth note subdivision with their dominant hand and the rhythms with their non-dominant hand.  There are some alterations to this in levels 3 and 4.

Count out Loud

Students should count out loud while performing subdivisions.  You will likely notice students stopping when it gets more challenging.  The method of saying it and playing it ultimately builds their internal pulse.

Start Small

Start with an exercise and focus on one line only.  Make sure the students feel successful before adding on.  If students begin to struggle, focus on the problem measure.

Vary the Voice Inflections

After the students get comfortable with the exercises, ask them to emphasize the beats played with the dominant hand.

Make it Fun!

Do the exercises with them and have fun with it.  You’ll be much more successful rather than just counting it off for them.  Challenge students to try it independently as well.
